A well knowned elven poem.

26-12-01

Namárië

Ah! like gold fall the leaves in the wind,
long years numberless as the wings of trees!
The long years have passed like swift draughts
of the sweet mead in lofty halls
beyond the West, beneath the blue vaults of Varda
wherein the stars tremble
in the voice of her song, holy and queenly.

Who now shall refill the cup for me?
For now the Kindler, Varda, the Queen of the stars,
from Mount Everwhite has uplifted her hands like clouds
and all paths are drowned deep in shadow;
and out of a grey country darkness lies
on the foaming waves between us,
and mist covers the jewels of Calacirya for ever.
Now lost, lost to those of the East is Valimar!
Farewell! Maybe thou shalt find Valimar!
Maybe even thou shalt find it! Farewell!

New staff member!

23-12-01

The Darklands staff welcomes a new member to the team.

He has the mandate of making the Shard more alive and to provide animation and entertainment to the players, with quests, controlling npcs, taking over the occasional creature for extra challenge, and in general make life interesting.

His name will seem appropriate to many characters who get to know him in greater depth.

All welcome GM Melkor.

NEW Darklands World Map!

15-12-01

Zombie Construction Guild presents its new production, Clean World phase I.
This great patch is a new step in our ongoing struggle to give our Citizens the best of worlds.
During a period of weeks, the undead and tireless workers of the guild ran all over the world, cleaning trash.

Yes, it is indeed true! All the crap and garbage that crippled our wish to customize our houses has been mercilessly obliterated and cast out into the void from which it should never have come out.
In order to enjoy this great new change, it will be necessary to download a file (you can found the files under the section Main Area -> Files) Copy this and put it into your UO directory, replacing the files.
Be sure to copy the original files to a safe place.

What does this patch consist of, exactly?
Static changes to Darklands map:

All buildings and structures are now clean of static decoration.

The following dynamic structures were made permanent:

The Barbarian Fortress

02-12-01

I decided to investigate upon the rumors of the barbarian town and the new orcish settlement. I first headed North, to the mountain valley of the Barbarians. Where once there was a wooden palisade, blocking all entrance, there now stands a stone and wooden wall, complete with patrol space along the top of the wall.A full open entrance, flanked on either side, if my memory serves me, by two guard outposts. The walls were heavily guarded and just inside were many young barbarian braves, waiting to prove themselves in the heat of battle. As quietly as I could, I crept inside the walls. Following along with the shadow of the wall, I made my way northward through the valley.

Soon enough, I knew I would be approaching the mountain pass into the inner valley. As it came into view I was surprised to see an even more elaborate defense system. Another fortified wall, with a gatehouse at its center spanned the gap of the mountain pass. Posted in each corner of the gatehouse and along the wall were crossbowman, equipped with some of the nastiest harbalests I've seen. Careful not to gain their attention, I made it to the doors. Opening one and slipping inside, I caught the attention of a warrior woman, but thankfully she dismissed the door's movement as a figment of her imagination. I travelled through the short mountain pass, and again, I came upon two guard posts on either side. Again, these were well guarded. Apparently, the 'barbarians' have something they wish to protect. Moving even further, I found the bustle of activity everywhere.

Upon being spotted, I ducked into the nearest building. When I turned to survey the room, I was surprised to see a large table, surrounded by benches, and a cushioned chair at its head. And all eyes were on me. Needless to say, I was ... escorted out of their fortressed area.

The voyage to the neitherworld...

27-11-01

The voyage to the neitherworld, thy place where undead rule and live, began with the sinking of the boat where we were traveling! It seemed that the undead were already using their magic and power to spoil our plans! Fortunately the living, fighting beings of our great land were not impressed nor scared with that small taste of undead power! They were only enraged by the happening and decided to see it not as an omen, but as feeble last attempt to delay our arrival!
It seemed that we were not as weak and unimportant as the governor thought we were!

Patch - Votes, NPC´s and Double Glory

12-11-01

We have patched, people! What does this bring us?

1- The voting and library items. Download the manual, it is updated and contains all the information. Check the table of contents.

2- Changes in NPCs. You will notice some additions and changes in barbarians, and also that blade spirits and Vortexes have become weaker. This was because these creatures acted as "fire and forget"missiles, that only had to be dropped in an area to kill all NPCs. As they are now they will still kill, but less; and will be very useful as decoys. Use the other elementals for heavier support.

3- The "rebuilding" is ending. During this week, until next tuesday (20/11) at an indeterminate time, all glory delivered in the Bounty books will be doubled. The money will remain the same, of course, don't be greedy.

It seems that the Barbarians where just sacrificing some poor human to their pagan gods.

The giants arrival...

18-10-01

The last few days, there have been several unsettling developments. What can an honest man think of such disgraces?

First some hunters spotted a dread Necromancer leading a party of Giants and other bizarre and fell creatures. The hunters were not very caring of the safety of their skins and engaged them. Then those foul smelly creatures from Dakeria got in on the mess and played havoc with the Necromancer's creatures. Being the stupid mean things that they are, they then went on and got into a fight with humans. Stupid bloodthirsty things!

Yet they have their uses, at times. The foe's attacking force suffered, and to be sure those travelling with him were likely important servants.

But what do we discover? That must have been the rear guard, because the old caves and mines were already taken over by great tribes of giants and other disgusting things. It is said they even have corrals with live creatures to eat… and a human or two!

Of course, in the next days the brave Citizens of Varonia and Mountaingate made several raids to keep the Giants under respect.

Alas, the dirty and cowardly foe did not hide his ill intentions and unleashed a major assault on both cities. A horde of stone-throwing, orc-smelling giants assaulted both the great city of Varonia and the foul hovel of Dakeria. Curiously, a strange man with amazing weaponry, armour and ability led them. A short time later he seemed to be calmly checking the battlefield, and even stopped to comment on the capacity of the fighters.

The daring! After a tough battle, with blood spilled, this creature comes to have fun?? I mean, that is good for Orcs, but not Humans!

Later on, he appeared to the Halfies as well, a pity he did not deign to slay them all.

Yet this is not all that worries me. His Excellency the Patrician seemed concerned over the invasion, but not overmuch. When I asked him, he curtly answered that undead can be dealt with. I wish he would not make such cryptic comments; what has that to do with Giants?

What does worry him? A few reports that the barbarians have been less active in battle, that their warriors have not been seen, that they are known to have been mining and lumbering.

Sometimes His Excellency doesn't seem to have his priorities straight...

Game Update

12-10-01

Today we have patched the world. Let us hope the patient will survive the operation *grins*

You will notice particularly the change in skills. Don't worry, check the "real" skill, its still the same. The increase is because now attributes have much greater influence than before on the final skill value.

Remember that it works for NPCs as well, and that some have very high attributes, therefore their change will be commensurate.

This is still a test period for this measure and we will evaluate how it works out before making it definitive.

We have also decreased the strength of blade spirits and energy vortexes. It has been amply demonstrated that these spells were seriously unbalanced, and considering that blade spirit is in effect a fifth level spell, there is no reason for a single one to slay troll after troll after troll.

We warn all mages that there has been a reassessment of the elementals, and they should now be far more useful. They have been changed to reflect their element, for example Earth elementals are very resistant and hardy, but slow. Try them out.

Today we have news in the area of Construction.

Our peerless GM Zombie fixed the doors in all houses and put small and medium deeds for sale on a house vendor.

In Varonia, he prepared and decorated two Inns, the Red Bear and the Sergeant's Rest. Inside the inns you will find an innkeeper with the deeds for sale.

The inn rooms cannot be player-decorated, as they represent cheap housing for the masses. They are comfortable and have good security. Read in the "Library" the Patrician's decree on the number of houses you can have.

Windows Theme

02-10-01

I was introduced to this shard by Drynd and Wikfeld, who were involved in the original beta trials, before DarkLands went public. I entered and created Widukin Legna, the Ranger, right after the official launch.

So you can say that I've been here since the beginning. :) I was not used to RPG's, or at least I can say that they were not my first choice as a gamer, but DarkLands and Ultima Online changed that.

All this experience and new kind of reality gave me the will to do something I like as well, which is windows themes (even though windows sucks). So with some amount of inspiration I decided to make this Darklands by Widukin theme, which is not a theme based on my char, but one based on darklands.

Hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed making it.

You can direct your critics and suggestions to that brick wall, hehe, just kidding, use the following e-mail: widukin_legna@netcabo.pt

Darklands - The lost days... Part II

30-09-01

Darklands is back up, with a new name (http://darklands.clans.vizzavi.pt). Alright, the name was not our choice, we preferred the old one, it was a little easier to memorize *smiles*.

We intended to put the server on Tuesday, to give us time to execute tests and so on.

As it turned out, the players did not let us. We don't know how, but they figured out that the server was active and started going in. We surrendered to evidence and... the door is open!!

Thank you all for your loyalty, your encouragement, and, yes, your impatience as well.

I will now ask, not for patience - thats in short supply *grins* - but your understanding. There is much to change, and to adjust, and with people on the server it is a little slower.
As for the rest...

The game is on.

To adjust the client to the new site, do this:
go to your uo directory find the login.cfg file edit it with wordpad or notepad change darklands.accao.net to darklands.clans.vizzavi.pt and save the file.

Darklands - The lost days...

25-09-01

Greetings to all our visitors.

As you know, Darklands suffered a severe disaster. Our host server went down, and it went down bad. The hard disk was a total loss, along with all the information contained within. This was a problem not limited to Darklands, many other sites fell along with us (200). It was at this time that we found out that the host site kept no backups whatsoever of the material entrusted to their servers.

Unfortunately, the damage was deep. We lost a month's worth of playtime, a month's worth of work, a month's work of world building. It is hard to say who was hit hardest - the players who trusted the world not to vanish under their feet, or we the Game Masters who lost I don't even want to think of how much world building.

Well, there is no way to recover our own work, but we will see to it that at least the players can recover from this, and recover well. So what did the players lose? The playing time is theirs, and nobody can take away from them the fun and emotions they had in Darklands. The character development, items bought, glory accumulated - that vanished.

Our first thought was, how to recover the player's loss? The truth is, we the Game Masters can't wave a wand and make it happen. With our world files gone, we don't know who did what. It is obviously unfair to choose case by case, according to our own fallible human memories, and try to help players individually. It is something we can't and won't do, because, not knowing all, we would be favouring some players against the others. That we won't do.

So we will let the players themselves decide, and decide in the fairest way we know: by playing. We declare that during an entire month, there will be a Rebuilding.
During this time, players will have the opportunity to accumulate glory, and in the end the glory that they have shall be doubled. By this process we can give compensation proportional to the loss, for the players who played the most during the lost month will be the ones that, this time, will also make the most.

In this way, since we lost a month, we shall recover a month.

I wish to extend our deepest thanks to our players. Their support and encouragement kept us on the way and gives us the strength to push our way past all troubles. That support extends in all directions, and I shall give here an example.

Talking with one of our players about our problem, that is, how to help the players recover, I mentioned our greatest problem: how to compensate without favouritism. The flat rate we had decided at first seemed completely unfair, and we were looking for ways past that. That player immediately came up with the answer, and the Rebuilding was born.

In the game, you know him as Drynd, and you will also know of his effort and time spent building the community of Darklands. I wish to extend here the public thanks of the entire Team for his help, for now and for all that has gone before. But what concerns us at this moment is this difficult period, and we do not mean the help he gave us, but the help he gave to all our players. Though this is little enough as a reward, for Drynd the glory at the end of this period will not be doubled, it will be trebled.

We went down, but we are standing up again and stronger than ever.

The precise mechanism by which we will double the glory is still to be decided. At the moment, we advise all players to store all their glory. Do not exchange it for skills, because the glory exchanged for anything else will not be doubled. Knights and other specializations, take care not to lose your head, as this time it will hurt double - all glory lost is glory that will not be doubled. I advise you to store your Insignias in the banks for safekeeping.

We expect to open the server for the weekend. Precisely when it will be we do not know, as we will have to make sure all is well and we will take the chance to do a couple of improvements along the way. Keep your eyes on this page.

As a side note, players may find it interesting to know that Darklands had its 1st birthday in the 21st of September, the date we opened to the public. Funny that… it was the date it suffered its most cruel blow. After this I guess I'll forget about my own birthday; I really don't feel like getting smashed by a truck.

Extra unit commanders: This option can only be installed by request to a GM.

Game Update

21-08-01

This patch brings several changes to the game, changes which will have impact in the way the world works.

Units- There are some changes to the way units work. Leaders will now be able to create unit containers and change their names, block them in place, lock or unlock. They will also be able to give names to several items, so they are best able to organize their people.
It will also be possible to have co-ownership and seconds in command.
A unit can have one owner or more (up to any number). These owners are equals and one can never replace the other.
Each owner can have one or more seconds in command. The second in command acts as an owner to all effects, with the exception that the owner can, if he wants, replace him or dispossess him of his position.
How this works: there is a register, which recognizes the owner. This register, when used on someone else, registers that person as second in command. From then on, when either one uses the register, he becomes the unit leader, until the register is used again. The difference is that the owner can choose to erase the other's identity from the register, and thus regain sole access, while the second-in-command can not usurp the leadership.
Co-ownership is achieved by having several such registers, each with a different owner.
It is also possible to have several second-in-commands, simply by having several registers but all with the same owner.

Bank box colours- Players with more than 100 glory can now change the colour of their bank box. They can purchase an item that they will then use in a dye tub with the colour they want, "charging" the item. Then they use the item in their bank box (and only theirs)

Mage specialization- mages will now be able to specialize, as fighters already do. They can be ArchMages (equivalent to the knight), necromancers and wizards (equivalent to the lesser specializations). The penalties in case of death are precisely the same. This gives them access to special wands with special spells.

Changing class- you will now have the choice of freely changing your class. This change will cost you very little, a mere two thousand gold (until the city decides to raise taxes of course)
Be reminded that you do NOT get any base skills in the new class, and any skills of the old class that are in excess of what is allowed in the new class will be simply cut off. If, for example, you had 90 swordfighting and the new class allows 100 you lose nothing, but if the new class allows only 50 you'll be cut down to 50, without winning anything in exchange.
All changes are permanent- if you do not like the new class you can, of course, change again, but you will not recover any skills. We advise that you only do this if you have the resources and ability to train the new skills, otherwise you may place yourself in a bad position.

Attribute control- you may now choose to reduce your attributes, for a modest quantity of money. When doing this, you will raise slightly in another attribute of your choice, representing a redirection of your efforts. This will only happen if the attribute in question has a value of 110 or less.
This ability answers an oft-felt need for players to gain greater control over their characters.

New model Blacksmith System- The system we now present represents a stupendous change in the whole system of item-making, for merchants and any class. We will start by implementing the black-smith objects.
Many thanks go to Wikfeld, who coded the objects and did it in a thoroughly professional and competent way. He implemented Almighty God's design flawlessly and showing great criativity. In order to still some evil minds, we wish to state that, as far as we can see, he left no loopholes so that he could enrich himself J. Any complaints on the design and operation should be directed to us, all praise for the coding to Wikfeld.

You can download the Blacksmith Manual under the rules section.

Specialization warning
All specializations- be aware that there are new items and abilities planned. Be also prepared for a possible increase in the penalties and costs in case of death. It is not our intention to scare players away from this path, but we also do now want recriminations later on.

Lack of knowledge of these rules is NOT an excuse.

Do NOT take on a specialization carelessly. We will adjust the penalties and costs of having a specialization according to the benefits, and we can do so with very short warning. Nobody needs take a specialization unless he wants to, and for this reason we consider that players are fully warned of the consequences and, by taking on the specialization, accept them without any reserves.

Those who want to lose their specializations can contact us now.

Be warned that soon it will not be possible to lose the specialization except at a cost. The faint of heart had better consider these words carefully.

Keep Rainehardt

25-07-01

Office of the Patrician of Varonia, year 943 after the Wall

In the name of the People, it is hereby proclaimed that from this day onwards Keep Rainehardt is declared to be officially reoccupied by the Peoples of Varonia and Mountaingate.

This is an occasion for momentous joy, for this keep has been un-garrisoned since the year 319, after which it was ruined by fire in the year 331.

Since then this symbol of our glorious past, this weapon set against the heart of the enemies of our people has lain dormant, waiting for new and brave blood to take up the challenge.

The City has nominated Peter and Sidhe as the first Wardens of Rainehardt Keep, for their great efforts in the service of our People and for their proven worth during the Battle of the Temple of Rukuth.

Let all worthy Citizens rejoice, and do their utmost for the success of this bold enterprise.

Refer to the office of the Patrician of Varonia for more information.

Thus spoke the storyteller Herrad na Goulurd of the Fall of the temple of Rukuth. Of the many ways this story was told, Herrad's is probably the best. Through his elaboration and mysticism, we find the best and most emotional picture of events, with an hint of the way those who made history actually lived it."

More Glory

10-06-01

This patch widens the road to glory.

There are now five "specializations". The knight, the berserker, the sharpshooter, the mercenary and the armsman.

To become a knight is to choose the hardest but more brilliant path. Knights have a bonus to all weapons and armour, the greater the glory the better the bonus. Knights may raise some skills above 100, up to 130. This is, of course, only possible on skills for which your class can go up to 98%, that is, in which you have no limitations. They also can purchase skills for less glory, paying only 85 instead of the base 100. On death knights suffer an automatic 5% loss of their glory, immediately and irretrievable. If their head is taken by their foes then there is a further loss.

The other specializations suffer an automatic glory loss of 1% only, and they pay only 95 glory instead of 100. They can also purchase skills up to 115%

Berserkers receive the same bonus as knights on two handed weapons, none on bows, a lesser bonus on single hand weapons. No armour bonus.

Sharpshooters receive the full knight bonus on bows. No armour bonus.

Mercenaries receive the full knight armour bonus, but no weapon bonuses.

Finally, armsmen receive a bonus in armour, a bonus in weapons (less on two-handed weapons than on single hand weapons), but these are lower than those of the knight.

Why these differences?
Those who choose the harder path must be better players, more confident and capable, experienced enough to go against hard opponents and surviving. Otherwise their loss of glory will be crippling. The weapon and armour bonuses only pile up above 2-3000 glory, so each death will be at least unpleasant. Repetitive deaths, or lack of care (such as coming out of the hospital, weakened, without any protection or weapon and rushing to the wilderness to retrieve one's property) will be costly.

Yet for many that path will be too hard, and for those we have the other specializations. Though not as strong they are still very good things to have.

All classes may take any specialization.

We must warn players that we are in the process of playtesting these specializations, therefore all these bonuses and penalties and value limits may change with little warning. There will also be specialization- specific objects and abilities. We are also in the process of coding the Mage specializations.

You will also notice that when going to train with the City trainer that you should not be armed nor armoured; do not go in naked, either.

Glory Update

21-05-01

The new patch opens the Glory Road.

Who should walk it? Let us separate the men from the boys.

To have the chance to choose to be registered as a Knight, you need to have already experience, in game terms 500 glory.

What is a Knight? In Darklands it is a warrior with property and recognized experience, one that is already known and relied upon. This is not equivalent to nobility (You are not called "Sir"), but a knight is no longer a regular citizen either.

A Knight is a figure in society and thus liable to be recognized. As you know, in roleplaying you should not assume to know the other person's name unless you have already been introduced, however when meeting a Knight you may know him even if he doesn't know you, as he has a measure of fame. In this matter, the choice is up to the player. The Knight can only assume to know you if you are a Knight as well.

When being addressed, normal citizens are called "Citizen" in general, but this is not the case with a Knight; he is called by his name, with no qualification, as he needs none.

Being a Knight will give you several benefices, such as a bonus to combat the more glory you have, and you can hire a trainer at the cost of lesser glory, as your standing reputation is already considerable. You also receive a certificate of your Knighthood, as well as a special signet ring with which you can mark your weapons and armour (must not be worn and must be in your backpack) Note that the certificates are numbered, and senior knights (That is, who have achieved this recognition first) take precedence in protocol. Be careful not to lose yours.
When fighting with other warriors, you are less penalized if you fall in battle, as it is assumed that great warriors fight other great warriors, and when the truly great fight the issue is always uncertain.

The disadvantages are not great, but insidious. When such a warrior falls in battle, no matter the cause, the matter is immediately noticed and his reputation suffers.
Should I become a Knight?

Those who have neither the skill nor the tactical ability to prevent themselves from being caught unawares had better not try to play with the big boys, as they will soon regret it. Otherwise, by all means go at it. It opens roads.

You will also notice that when going to train with the City trainer that you should not be armed nor armoured; do not go in naked, either.Lettow and Rakird

Update

06-05-01

The current patch brings in several changes, though most will not be immediately noticeable. You will see the work when you go check your current glory; there you will have the option to show the people around you how much you have.

Other changes involve dying- there were some outstanding bugs that we hope were definitely dealt with this time.

Other than this, there were some great changes that will not be immediately obvious to players, but will serve as building blocks for the future.

Hospitals

22-04-01

The new patch is a matter of life and death. It is about an issue we have had in mind for a while and finally managed to code it. Now, when you are struck down, you will be transported to your city, unless you have no citizenship or are a banished criminal, in which case you will be sent into the wilderness.

When you awaken you will be in the hospital.

This patch addresses several problems, not the least of which was the very nasty bit after you died when you had to run back in ghost form to your base, not a pleasant endeavour if you had been fighting enemies far from your home territory. This will no longer be an issue. With this we also fix the problem of raiders assaulting an enemy city recovering at the attacked city's own healers, of ghost spies, ghost infiltrators and so on.

We have also made a couple of minor tweaks and corrections, namely in classes and items, and corrected the attribute gain values in several skills.

We hope you enjoy these changes.

Classes Update / PVP Info / Rules Update

15-04-01

The new patch brings in some major changes.

We have decided to remove three classes from the initial choices, Paladins, Clerics and Thieves. The first two were basically inactive already, as we heatedly argued how they would be integrated in the game. We have reached what we believe is a good solution, and it does include allowing characters to start as either Clerics or Paladins. They can be achieved only through playing the game; the detailed explanations and description can be found in the "Classes" area of the site.

Thieves are an altogether different matter. After some soul-searching we reached the conclusion that their presence is far more disruptive than useful. The "traditional" thief duties of opening locked doors and chests are not important in Darklands, because we do not endorse the "dungeon" mentality. This is not D&D, and people do not start automatically in a party. In D&D also, GMs tend to disallow, for example, pickpocketing someone who is aware of your presence and intentions. Not in this system, where the skill itself is pretty much screwed up as it was designed. Snooping is nothing short of abusive and pretty much strains suspension of disbelief.
Of course, we could have crippled the class in that respect, but there were still two basic problems.

Why would you want a thief in your party, with reduced skills and not enough of the others to make a mark?

What is the use for a class that is automatically either a predator of other players- and whose "practitioners" would very soon be banned through the citizenship system- or that must simply raid the NPCs, like one milks cows?

Against it, we have the disgust of players, the disruption and mistrust they engender, the very fact that in order to act according to their chosen class they must bother other players.
Therefore, this class is off the game, until we or somebody else comes up with an excellent argument to make it live again.

We have received proposals for an "assassin" class. We have made some test runs, but reached the conclusion that it would be a "neither here nor there" class. Poisoning is an asset, but a limited one and easily countered- and we are not building a class on a single skill. Furthermore, each of the classes other than bard or craftsman has potential as an assassin.

Finally, like the thief, what would be its justification? Professional assassins appear in different societies, not straight medieval-border ones. When we have a different society set up, it will be considered… but like the cleric and the paladin, not as a starting class.

We have also received some questions about the militia. We advise that all applicants take care to read the rules relating to it, in the City rules section. Applicants should go to the militia house and write on the board, to be contacted.

We wish to make it clear, perfectly clear that this is not a "fighting" shard, only one where player versus player combat is allowed.

This means that you are supposed to have a roleplay reason to initiate a fight. One example is humans and orcs trading insults, or a case where one has been attacked before. However, even this should be kept within reason. Having been attacked once is not a reason for twenty successive fights without warning, though if in the next encounter both combatants again trade insults and wish to have a go at it, all the best for them.

Understand that what we have in mind is not to stop you from fighting, but that you should be forced into fights you don't want. Avoiding fights should be always an option, though it may mean being forced to swallow some insults (these should be in character always, READ THE RULES) and lose some honour. If that condition is satisfied, fight, fight away!

Loot rules:
Previously in beta the rule was "no armour may be looted". Take note that that rule is now revoked, I mean:
You may fully loot the dead bodies of your foes.

Looting the bodies of co-citizens is not well seen, and considered a crime. It is akin to or attacking fellow citizens. Doing that can get you into trouble; then again it may not. Be aware there is a risk of being banished from your City and blocked from joining another. This is an in-game matter.

There have been rule changes in General Laws and Player Conflicts.

Please Review them.

Citizenship

27-02-01

On this patch:

1- Citizenship
You will find next to banks and outside main entrances special stones that allow you to choose your citizenship. We advise you to think carefully. If you choose one city other than that in which you have the bank, contact us so that we may switch the chests.

2- City gates
Now only citizens or allies can open the city gates. Those of Mountaingate and Varonia can enter each other's cities. Half-orcs can only enter their own city.
City walls will be changed so that it will not be possible to jump off the towers. This means entrance or exit will only be possible through gates.
When a citizen opens a gate, it will remain open during a few seconds- and during that time intruders may rush in.
Raiders who enter an enemy city must take care with this, as they may find it hard to get out of it again.

3- Fighting rules
As before it is not allowed to engage in combat unless there is a valid roleplaying reason, such as a challenge or a duel. Players are encouraged to play their role, trade insults and- if they wish to- fight, but both sides must agree to the fight
The exception is that half-orcs found in a human city or humans found in the half-ork city of Dakeira can be attacked on sight by the city inhabitants. As of now the intruders can NOT initiate combat, though they are of course encouraged to ask for a duel.

4- Be warned that the system is being gradually changed so that war and infighting between cities and races will be possible. Think ahead and prepare for future trouble now.

Update

22-01-01

This last patch brings us a few news.

We are now in the final stage of development before the server opens for the general public.

In this patch we address the dreams and yearnings of our Craftsmen. They will now be able to do what they are meant to do, that is, take control of the economy of the entire shard.

They will be able to make deadly weapons and strong armours with the resources of the land that surrounds us all, and get filthy rich in the process.

To make these new items, you will need resources- logs, ingots, hides- and tools- dagger, hammer, anvil, forge. You will find the full details further along on the website (Rules Section).

This is not all. In the plans we have special bodyguard units- similar to mercenary and guard units, but controlled by merchants. With those the smart merchant will be able to keep his own personal guard.

For those of you who yearn for glory on the battlefield, this will present several new avenues of development. You will have wealthy employers and suppliers, and there is also a path towards getting your own unit that does not lie (solely) on the golden road.
Glory will be your ticket to the highest positions of the land.

Just be quick about it as the merchants have every intention of getting there as well, and they can pay their way along equally fast.

Who will wield the true power?

Lettow and Rakird.

Latest Update

13-01-01

The new update brings some important changes.
For a start, we have adjusted the prices of weapons, and also changed the resources needed to produce them. This was due to the fact that we discovered that players were making some unholy fortunes in a very short period of time.

Balancing the economy is a very dicey decision, and we are bound to make some mistakes. We do try to correct these as soon as they are revealed, and we also use a "general solution" type of logic- that is, try to understand the underlying cause and find a solution that is generalist and can be applied throughout.

One of the most glaring cases was the fact that the weapon styles were unbalanced. Swords had virtually all the weapons, fencing just a few and bad, maces were on the middle- but compared to swords, maces kind of sucked ass.

For this reason we changed the styles. Now swords really describe only hand-held big blades, maces are the bashing stuff and fencing we used for hafted weapons- that is, a largish handle and a blade of some sort on the tip. This includes spears and axes.
Unfortunately, the Sphere system is quite unwieldy. It does not allow us to change some things independently of others. As a result the graphics- the action you see on screen- is out of synch with what one would expect.
Having to change between the graphics and the game working, we chose the later. We'll see if it was a good decision.
Whether you agree or not, I hope you realize that this was a hard-thought decision, not an arbitrary "lets just do this" kind of fix. Its 5 am now and we've been pounding at it for longer than I want to think of….

Another hard decision was the decision on skill level and resource cost to make weapons, and bows in particular. Craftsmen will find out that now it is much harder. Due to a mistake in the original change, the values for the skills were about 10 times less than they should be. We didn't notice at the time that writing 60 instead of 60.0 would cause this difference…

We have also reduced the crafting ability of other classes. This ensures that craftsmen will indeed have a unique place in the game. No other class will be able to do many of the things they do. Rangers and fighters are not meant to be high-powered miners or lumberjackers. They can do it, but much less efficiently, enough for their own use but not nearly as good for mass production.

Rangers can still achieve a high skill at crafting bows, but they will have more trouble getting wood.

Craftsmen are now able to heal slightly better- they can reach Grand master level now- and they can also poison better. All in all, we believe the classes are better balanced now. We hope you find this is so as well, and that this will enhance your enjoyment of the game.

Lettow and Rakird.
